Microsoft has been open about what sort of information they collection, and how it is used. The release of version 4 in 2019 was the first whole-number update since version 3 in 2016. It's completely anonymized so there's no personally identifiable information in it, and we are not charged so much as a single cent for it. Microsoft does provide vendors with things from their telemetry like crash data. In any case, I have a pretty darn good idea of what types of information is collected by security software.

The paid version of both programs offers protection from spy ware and phishing attacks, and it’s obvious why the paid edition is more popular. Well, I think that I do understand a little bit about how Microsoft works, since I've been spent a few weeks on their Redmond campus every year, either as one of their MVP's or as the most senior researcher in the U.S. It is easy to use, although Avast has a more advanced gui.
